षद्विंशस्सर्गः
( ताटक वध)

मुनेर्वचनमक्लीबं श्रुत्वानरवरात्मजः।
राघवः प्रांजलिर्भूत्वा प्रत्युवाच दृढव्रतः ॥

Raghava , the best of men hearing those encouraging words of the venerable sage spoke as follows with firm conviction.

पितुर्वचन निर्देशात् पितुर्वचन गौरवात् ।
वचनं कौशिकस्येति कर्तव्यं अविशंकया ॥
अनुशिष्टोsस्म्ययोध्यायां गुरुमध्ये महात्मना ।
पित्रा दशरथेनाहं नावज्ञेयं हि तद्वचः ॥
सोsहं पितुर्वचः श्रुत्वा शासनात् ब्रह्मवादिनः ।
करिष्यामि न संदेहः ताटकवधमुत्तमम् ॥
गोब्राह्मण हितार्थाय देशस्यास्य सुखाय च ।
तवचैवाप्रमेयस्य वचनं कर्तुमुद्यत ॥

' To obey and act as per the direction of the sage is the command of my father. In order to respect my fathers commitment, as well as the commmitment given by my father in the presence of venerable Vashista and others in Ayodhya, his words cannot be disobeyed. As per my fathers words and as per your direction I will kill Tataki. For the benefit of Brahmans and protection of cows and the welfare of this land I am ready for implementing your directions'.

एव मुक्त्वा धनुर्मध्ये बद्द्वामुष्टिं अरिंदमः ।
ज्या शब्दं अकरोत् तीव्रं दिशश्शब्देन नादयन् ॥
तेन शब्देन वित्रस्ताः ताटकावनवासिनः ।
ताटकाच सुसंकृद्दा तेन शब्देन मोहिता ॥
तं शब्दमभिनिध्याय राक्षसी क्रोधमूर्च्छिता ।
श्रुत्वाचाभ्यद्रवद्वेगात् यतश्शब्दो विनिश्रुतः ॥

Having said this Rama who can demolish the enemies, held the bow in the middle with a tightened fist and let go a twang of the bow . With that sound of the bow all the residents of the Tataka forest were shaken with fear. Even Tataki became extremely angry. Hearing that sound and have been unnerved and angry, she immediately ran in the direction from where the sound emnated.

तां दृष्ट्वा राघवः कृद्धां विकृतां विकृताननां ।
प्रमाणेनातिवृद्धां च लक्ष्मणं सोभ्यsभाषत ॥

Looking at the huge and gruesome form and wicked face of Tataki , Raghava spoke to Lakshmana.

पश्य लक्ष्मण यक्षिण्या भैरवं दारुणं वपुः ।
भिद्येरन् दर्शनादस्या भीरूणां हृदयानिच ॥
एनां पश्य दुराधर्षां मायाबलसमन्विताम् ।
विनिवृत्तां करोम्यद्य हृतकर्णाग्रनाशसिकाम्॥
न ह्येनामुत्सहे हंतुं स्त्रीभावेन रक्षितम् ।
वीर्यं चास्यागतिं चापि हनिष्यामीति मे मतिः ॥

Oh Lakshmana ! Look at the fearsome and gruesome looking Yakshini. The heart of timid people will sink even by looking at her. I will cut off the ears and nose of this unassailable and powerful Yakshini and make her go back. Since she is a woman I do not feel like killing her. I think it is better to reduce her powers'.

एवं ब्रुवाणे रामे तु ताटका क्रोधमूर्छिता ।
उद्यम्यबाहू गर्जंती राममेवाभ्यधावता ॥
विश्वामित्रस्तु ब्रह्मर्षिः हुंकारेणाभिभर्त्स्यताम् ।
स्वस्ति राघवयोरस्तु जयं चैवाभ्यभाषत ॥

As Rama was saying these words, Tataki swaying with anger and raising her shoulders, jumped on Rama with a roar. Then the Venerable Sage Viswamitra too sayimg 'Hum' , roared to bless and say , 'Let victory be that of Rama and Lakshmana'.

उद्धून्वाना रजो घोरं ताटका राघवावुभौ ।
रजोमोहेन महता मुहूर्तं सा व्यमोहयत् ॥
ततो मायां समास्थाय शिलावर्षेण राघवौ ।
अवाकिरत् सुमहता ततश्चुक्रोध राघवः ॥
शिलावर्षं महत् तस्याः शरवर्षेण राघवः ।
प्रतिहत्योपधावंत्याः करौ चिच्छेद पत्रभिः ॥
ततश्चिन्नभुजां श्रांतां अभ्याशे परिगर्जतीम्।
सौमित्रिरकरोत् क्रोधात् हृतकर्णाग्रनासिकाम् ॥

Then that Tataki spreading fearful and raging dust on Rama and Lakshmana , made them preplexed for a moment. Being invisible with her magical powers she then rained a shower of rocks. Then Rama too angered countered the shower of rocks by using a slew of arrows to stop them. Then he cut of the hands of that Tataki who is jumping on him. Lakshman then cut off the nose of that Tataki who even with hands which were cut off was roaring and rushing at them.

कामरूपधरा सद्यः कृत्वा रूपाण्यनेकशः ।
अंतर्थानं गता यक्षी मोहयंतीव मायया ॥
आश्मवर्षं विमुंचंती भैरवं विचचार ह ॥
ततस्तावश्म वर्षेण कीर्यमाणौ समंततः ।
दृष्ट्वा गाधिसुतः श्रीमान् इदं वचन मब्रवीत् ॥

Assuming numerous forms and conjuring up tricks , that Tataki capable of attaining any form, tried to confuse them. Without being seen she showered rocks and was moving all over . Seeing Rama and Lakshmana locked in that huge shower of rocks , the powerful Viswamitra spoke as follows.

अलं ते घृणया रामा पापैषा दुष्टचारिणी ।
यज्ञविघ्नकरी यक्षी पुरा वर्धति मायया ॥
वध्यतां तावदेवैषा पुरा संध्या प्रवर्तते ।
रक्षांसि संध्याकालेषु दुर्दर्षाणी भवंति वै ॥

O Rama ! Enough of consideration to this woman. This sinful Yakshini is a wicked lady. She creates impediments to the sacrifices. With her ability to conjure up tricks she becomes more powerful during twilight hours. Rakshasas become more powerful in twilght hours. Please demolish her before that'.

इत्यक्तस्तु तदा यक्षीं अश्मवृष्ट्याभिवर्षतीम् ।
दर्शयन् शब्दवेधित्वं त्वां रुरोध स सायकैः ॥
सा रुद्धा शरजालेन मायाबल समन्विता ।
अभिदुद्राव काकुत् स्थं लक्ष्मणं च विनेदुषी ॥
तमपतंतीं वेगेन विक्रांतं अशनीमिव ।
शरेणोरसि विव्याथा सा पपात ममार च ॥

Having been directed thus , SriRama then stopped that showers of rocks using a missile called 'Sabdabhedi' . Having been thus arrested she rushed towards Rama and Lakshmana. Seeing her rushing towards them the powerful Rama shot her with all powerful arrows. Immediately she fell down and lost her life.

तां हंतांभीमसंकाशां दृष्ट्वा सुरपतिस्तदा ।
साधु साध्विति काकुत् स्थं सुराश्च समपूजयन् ॥
उवाच परमप्रीतः सहस्राक्षः पुरंदरः ।
सुराश्च स्सर्वे संहृष्टा विश्वामित्र मथाब्रुवन् ॥
मुने कौशिक भद्रं ते सेंद्रा स्सर्वे मरुद्गणाः ।
तोषिताः कर्मणानेन स्नेहं दर्शय राघवे ॥

Seeing that fearsome looking Tataki thus killed , all Devas led by Indra gave their appreciation by saying ' well done' ,'well done'.
Delighted Indra and other Devas spoke to sage Viswamitra as follows.' 'O Viswamitra ! With the killing of Tataka all the Devas are delighted. You may show more favors to Rama '.

प्रजापते र्भृशाश्वस्य पुत्त्रान् सत्य पराक्रमान् ।
तपोबलभृतान् ब्रह्मन् राघवाय निवेदय ॥
पात्रभूताश्च ते ब्रह्मन् तवानुगमने धृतः ।
कर्तव्यं च महत्कर्म सुराणां राजसूनुना ॥
एवमुक्त्वा सुरा सर्वे हृष्टाजग्मुर्यथागतम् ।
विश्वामित्रं पुरस्कृत्य ततसंध्या प्रवर्तते ||

'O Brahmarshi ! The sons of Prajapati Bhrusasva are of true valor. They are also equipped with the power of penance. They are of the form of a weapon. Please offer them to Rama. Oh Sage ! Rama is serving your cause with firm conviction. Hence is fit to receive these weapons. He is to perform an important task for Devas'. Having thus spoken , the Devas went to their residences after having duly honored Viswamitra.

ततो मुनिवरः प्रीतः ताटकवथतोषितः ।
मूर्ध्नि राममुपाघ्राय इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥
इहाद्य रजनीं राम वसेम शुभ दर्शन ।
श्वः प्रभाते गमिष्यामः तदाश्रम पदं मम ॥
विश्वामित्रवचः श्रुत्वा हृष्टो दशरथात्मजः ।
उवास रजनीं तत्र ताटकया वने सुखम् ॥

తా|| అంతట ఆ మహర్షి తాటక వధకు సంతుష్ఠుడాయెను. ప్రేమతో శ్రీరాముని తలను మూర్కొనెను. పిమ్మట ఆ రాఘవునితో ఇట్లనెను. ' శుభదర్శనుడవగు ఓ రామా ! ఈ రాత్రికి ఇచటనే నివశింతము . రేపు ఉదయముననే బయలు దేరి మన ఆశ్రమమునకు వెళ్ళేదము'. విశ్వామిత్రుని వచనములను విని రాముడు సంతసించెను . వారందరూ ఆరాత్రి అచటనే గడిపిరి.

Then the Maharshi too delighetd with the killing of Tataki , touched the head of Rama with affection. Then he spoek to Rama. ' Oh Rama we will say here for the night . Tomorrow morning we will proceed to our hermitage'. Hearing those words of Viswamitra, Rama too was happy. They then spent the night in that place.

मुक्त शापं वनं तच्च तस्मिन्नेव तदाsहनि ।
रमणीयं विबभ्राज यथा चैत्ररथं वनम् ॥

Then the forest being free of the curse shone brightly like the grove of Chaitraratha.

निहत्य तां यक्षसुतां स रामः
प्रशस्यमानः सुरसिद्ध संघैः ।
उवास तस्मिन् मुनिना सहैव
प्रभात वेलां प्रतिभोध्यमानः ॥

Having killed that daughter of Yaksha and praised by Suras and Siddhas , SriRama spent the night there with the best among sages. In the early morning hours the best of Sages woke them up.

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये
बालकांडे षद्विंश स्सर्गः ॥
समाप्तं ॥
